Sunlight is the most important source of Vitamin D. Ultraviolet rays from the sun increase the speed of production of Vitamin D in the skin. Fifteen minutes of sun exposure a day is enough to complete your Vitamin D requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the sun has become more and more dangerous to our skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sunlight contains three types of ultraviolet rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC:<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n

  • UVA<\/strong> rays cause skin aging and wrinkling and contribute to skin cancer, such as melanoma. Because UVA rays pass effortlessly through the ozone layer (the protective layer of atmosphere, or shield, surrounding the earth), they make up the majority of our sun exposure.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • UVB<\/strong> rays are also dangerous, causing sunburns, cataracts (clouding of the eye lens), and effects on the immune system.\u00a0They also contribute to skin cancer. Melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is thought to be associated with severe UVB sunburns that occur before the age of 20. Most UVB rays are absorbed by the ozone layer, but enough of these rays pass through to cause serious damage.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • UVC<\/strong> rays are the most dangerous, but fortunately, these rays are blocked by the ozone layer and don’t reach the earth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What’s important is to protect your family from exposure to UVA and UVB, the rays that cause skin damage.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Let’s talk a little bit about the conventional sunscreens that are on the market.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Sunscreens commonly include ingredients that act as \u201cpenetration enhancers\u201d and help the product adhere to skin. As a result, many sunscreen chemicals are absorbed into the body and can be measured in blood, breast milk and urine samples.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The most common sunscreens on the market contain chemical filters. These products typically include a combination of two to six of these active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide and\/or titanium dioxide. A handful of products combine zinc oxide with chemical filters.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Lab studies indicate that some chemical UV filters may mimic hormones or cause skin allergies, which raises important questions about unintended effects on human health from frequent sunscreen application. The most worrisome is oxybenzone, added to nearly 70 percent of the non-mineral sunscreens. (EWG)<\/span><\/p>\n

    In addition to oxybenzone, other chemical filters appear to be endocrine disruptors. Nine<\/span> researchers from Denmark and Switzerland reviewed the available evidence on hormone disruption for three common UV filters (oxybenzone, homosalate and octinoxate), three uncommon UV filters (Benzophenone-2, PABA and OD-PABA), and two European ingredients (3-BC and 4-MBC) (Krause 2012). They report that a large number of studies in animals and cells have shown that the chemicals affect reproduction and development by altering reproductive and thyroid hormones, although the evidence was mixed for some studies. Animal studies find lower sperm counts and sperm abnormalities after exposure to oxybenzone and octinoxate, delayed puberty after exposure to octinoxate and altered estrous cycling for female mice exposed to oxybenzone. Recently Danish researchers reported that eight of 13 chemical sunscreen ingredients allowed in the U.S. affected calcium signaling of male sperm cells in laboratory tests, which the researchers suggest could reduce male fertility (Endocrine Society 2016).
